Salga calls for calm amid Johannesburg water protests

The South African Local Government Association (Salga) Gauteng on Thursday called for calm and cooperation amid the ongoing service delivery protests in the City of Johannesburg.

Residents are protesting the water supply interruptions caused by maintenance work being carried out by Johannesburg Water.

The association said in a statement that communities have the democratic right to protest and voice their grievances, however, such actions should be carried out peacefully and responsibly.

“Of particular concern is the recent blockade of access to a healthcare facility. This action places the lives of vulnerable patients at risk by denying them critical healthcare services,” Salga commented.

“The act is therefore strongly condemned, and a call is made for all stakeholders to ensure that hospitals and other essential services remain accessible at all times.”

Salga Gauteng urges and welcomes ongoing efforts by the City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Water to provide regular updates to communities as part of the work to stabilise water supply across the city.

Transparent communication is key in reducing frustration, strengthening trust, and ensuring that residents remain informed as progress is made to resolve challenges.

“We encourage residents to engage with municipal feedback sessions or reach out to their ward councillors. Constructive dialogue between communities and municipalities is the most effective way to address service delivery challenges.”

Calm, patience, and cooperation are essential as efforts continue to stabilise water provision, with lasting solutions achievable only through collaboration, transparency and respect for human life and dignity, Salga concluded.
